ABOUT US

photo: portfolio pictureN.W. Bloom is a full scale design/build company that specializes in creating environmentally sound landscapes in the greater Seattle area. Since its inception in 2000, N.W. Bloom has been dedicated to protecting the Northwest's environment, and one of the first environmentally sound landscape companies that HAS NEVER USED pesticides. Over the past several years we have been pleased to see the public become more environmentally conscious and we are proud to be leaders and educators that offer alternatives which make ecological sense.

Our Roots and Our Passion:
NorthWest Bloom is a family owned and operated business located in Mill Creek WA. Jessica Bloom, Owner, comes from a strong background of horticulture and environmental science. Along with her experience in project management, ranging from organizing restoration projects with community volunteers, to high-end residential and commercial landscape design and installation, in early 2000, she decided to start a business in the landscaping industry. Her passion is to preserve the natural ecological balance in the great Northwest, to ensure a healthy living environment for generations to come. Combined with her artistic design talents and extensive horticultural knowledge, it became a vision to fill a needed option for organic and ecological landscaping. Her creativity brings NorthWest Bloom designs an artistic and natural elegance.

Our Commitment to Being Sustainable:
Being sustainable is not only apart of our everyday business practices, but it is prevalent in our landscapes as well. A few examples of how our landscapes are sustainable:

  • Rain water absorption and catchment. Through proper soil building, rain gardens, bioswales, and pervious surfaces our gardens filter stormwater rather than letting it run off site into streams and waterways. We use rain catchment systems for homeowners to reuse the rain water in their gardens.
  • Edibles for both homeowners and wildlife. We create spaces for vegetable, herb and berry gardening so that clients can enjoy food grown from their own soil. By incorporating specific plant communities we can attract various types of native wildlife. Diverse layering with native plants also provides habitat to shelter wildlife.
  • We design landscapes to be healthy for the long term. This means proper design by using the right plant in the right place, choosing plants that are not susceptible to disease, NEVER using pesticides or other harmful synthetic chemicals. Native plants belong in our climate and are the most sustainable plants available to us and will require the least amount of resources as they become established. Less water, little to no fertilizer, etc.
  • We use recycled materials in our landscapes - from compost to construction materials such as lumber and bricks
  • We recycle the materials we take out of landscapes like green debris and concrete. The concrete is ground into a gravel that we use for the base of our hardscaping
We practice sustainablilty as a way of life; being environmentally conscience is just common sense. Being conservative and efficienct with all resources is a priority. Recycling is also something we are passionate about. In our nursery we even have a plant orphanage! Good plants won't go to waste - we will take care of them until we find them a good home. We source materials from as many local suppliers as possible, when ever possible, to minimize our carbon footprint. We are also very pleased to be running BIODIESEL in all of our vehicles and equipment.

Jessica is listed as one of the "40 TOP LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS" in Northwest Home + Garden's May/June 2005 issue.

"Jessica Bloom is a hard-core organic landscaping practitioner, eschewing all pesticides, but that doesn't limit the artfulness of her designs, which are marked by lush layers of native plants, trees and hardscapes. Her Mill Creek-based design-build firm, N.W. Bloom: Ecological Landscapes, specializes in creating low-maintenance, edible, native and ornamental gardens. You can even hire her just to import splashes of color to match the seasons." ~Debra Prinzing, Northwest Home & Garden magazine
